Chapter 6

“Now that you’ve been there over a month, how are things going?” Emily teased, and Ciara rolled her eyes. Her bare feet padded on the deck overlooking the beach while she spoke on the phone to Emily. It was early evening and a gentle breeze lifted her skirts.

“You know I can’t really talk about whatever’s going on,” Ciara said with a little laugh. “But I’m allowed to at least tell you I’m doing ok.”

“So are you any way close to getting…you know, pregnant?” Emily asked in a comical whisper.

Ciara sighed. Since Emily already knew from the beginning what the contract was generally about, it wasn’t like Ciara could play dumb about the pregnancy.

“Okay, don’t answer that if you don’t want to,” Emily said with a playful sigh after Ciara hesitated.

“I get it - you signed a non disclosure and all. But I can’t help but be curious what it’s like. You know, hanging with a gorgeous billionaire, going to all those fabulous parties and wearing those awesome dresses.”

“The glamor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,” Ciara said wryly. “But I’ll admit, it’s…different. Not saying it’s something I want to get used to. I like peace and quiet. I guess deep down I’ll always be a small-town girl.”

“And there’s no place like home, huh?” Emily added, as they both chuckled.

But Ciara’s smile faded as moments later the call ended. Shivering at the slight chill rising in the air, she withdrew back into the house.

Talking about Zane only made her miss him more. She thought of the morning after that last night, waking up and as expected, finding herself alone again.

But she hadn’t bargained for getting a call from Jennifer informing her that Zane was off on a business trip. Had left just that morning and would be gone for a few days.

This had shocked Ciara to the marrow at the sudden news but then it wasn’t like she could complain.

“You’ll hear from me if there’s anything else that needs your attention,” the efficient-sounding PA had told Ciara two days ago. “Oh and one more thing…you will be due for a check up by next week. You’ll be undergoing some tests regarding the stipulation of your contract as it’s necessary to confirm if there’s any development.”

“I understand,” Ciara said, her voice striving to stay even.

Even now days later, Ciara still felt preoccupied by thoughts of what the outcome of the tests would be. Jennifer’s words had effectively reminded Ciara of what this whole arrangement was based on. So Ciara had no business pining for Zane the way she couldn’t stop doing.

Couldn’t stop thinking about them tangled up in the sheets, skin on skin and flesh embedded in flesh. Her arms imprisoned above her head, she’d felt deliciously trapped beneath her demanding lover as he’d massaged her walls with each thrust.

Without her knowing, Ciara found herself on Zane’s side of the mansion. She’d never been inside his bedroom though she knew where it was - and that this part of the house was out of bounds to her.
